Among Cuba's most influential musical institutions, Orquesta Aragón has spent more than eight decades preserving and expanding the traditions of charanga music. Often called "La Charanga Eterna," the orchestra has become synonymous with the refinement of Cuban dance music, helping popularize cha-cha-cha while maintaining a repertoire that spans danzón, son cubano, salsa, and other Afro-Cuban styles.
Founded in Cienfuegos in 1939 by Orestes Aragón Cantero, the ensemble established its identity through disciplined musicianship before entering a defining period under violinist Rafael Lay, whose leadership elevated the orchestra into one of Cuba's premier musical groups. The arrival of flautist Richard Egües further strengthened its reputation, with his compositions and improvisations becoming central to the Aragón sound.
International tours and an extensive catalog introduced the orchestra to audiences globally, and its influence reached generations of musicians. Many years on, Orquesta Aragón remains one of the defining ensembles in the history of Cuban popular music.
